Proposal: A formal offer of marriage.
-
Once upon a time, marriage proposals were a relatively traditional thing that followed a prescribed format.
He would get down on one knee in front of her, put on the sincerest look that ever a man could muster, pull out a tiny box containing his best effort in small diamond buying, and say something standard like, "Will you marry me?"
Awe, yes, those were the good old days when we all knew our roles and followed them without question.
   No more.
Thanks to modern technology, pop culture, the Internet, and a much smaller world, people are proposing in the most unusual and creative ways.
This page contains examples of proposals from our visitors.  They are interesting and entertaining.  Perhaps one of them will give you an idea that you'll be able to use.  Also, those of you who have experienced a unique or special proposal are encouraged to send a description of it our way.  We'd love to post it here.
   Okay, here we go.....

CAPTURED BY A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR
Every girl imagines being carried off by her knight
in shining armour upon a white steed.  Well, it actually happened to me.  It was a Saturday afternoon when I heard some commotion going on outside my apartment window.  I looked out and could not believe my eyes.  A small crowd was gathered around a tall white horse with a knight dressed in armour sitting on his back.  A man in a serf's costume was holding the horse's reigns as a television cameraman was pointing his camera up at my window.  The knight gestured for me to come down.  As I made my way down the stairs, the whole thing seemed very surreal.  When I got to the crowd, the serf helped the knight off of the horse and, as the camara rolled, he raised his viser to reveal the handsome face of my long time boyfriend.  He asked me to marry him.  I was so happy that I started crying but was able to manage blurting out a loud "Yes!"  The knight (he got both outfits from a local costume shop) gave me a big hug and a kiss followed by lifting me up on to the back of the horse.  As the crowd cheered, the serf took us for a stroll around the parking lot.  Our proposal appeared on the local television station that evening.  Today I am married to my dream knight.

A VERY COLD PROPOSAL
I work on the third floor of an office building in St. Paul.  It was getting near noontime when I overheard two of the employees near a window whispering to each other.  Then they started laughing followed by one of them looking at me and saying, "I think you need to see this."  I got up from my work station and walked over to the window.  As I looked down on the snow-covered sidewalk, I almost had a heart attack.  Written in pieces of firewood painted black was the shape of the words, "Alecia, will you be my wife?"  Standing next to the message was the unmistakeable figure of the man I love, dressed in his black overcoat, and waving up at me.  By now everyone on our side of the floor had gathered around me as I waved back and nodded yes.  They all clapped as I ran down the aisle to go kiss the man who has been my beloved husband for over six years now.

A VIRTUAL PROPOSAL
My then boyfriend enjoys playing around with building web sites.  He has one that is all about his hobby and a small commercial site where he makes a little money selling everything from books to computer software.  One day I received an e-mail from him which included a web site address.  I brought up my bowser and keyed it in.  Click!  As the site loaded, I was stunned.  He had constructed a huge page with the words "Marry Me, Mary!" in big bold text across the top.  The rest of the page included all kinds of declarations of his love for me as well as some photos of us together and little wedding graphics.  At the bottom I found three buttons.  One said "Yes."  The others said "No" and "Maybe."  I clicked the first one and that was a year ago.  We have been married for seven months now and I still go back and visit that web site page every now and then for fun.

LAKE LOVE
The west coast of Michigan is covered with sandy beaches not unlike the two oceanside coasts of our nation.  Lake Michigan's beaches stretch on and on for miles.  Two people can easily find a spot where there is no one else around.  It was late one evening when my boyfriend and I were sitting on the beach watching the sun go down.  It's kind of an optical illusion because it looks like the sun is sinking into the middle of the lake.  As we watched it turn a reddish-pink color, he leaned over and kissed me.  Then he looked into my eyes and said, "Baby, let's never let the sun go down on our love for each other."  So, I said, "Well, then, let's get married."  He laughed and started teasing me by wrestling me down on to the sand.  As I looked up at his handsome face, he said, "Baby, marry me."  I nodded and we didn't get up for awhile.  I won't tell you why but I will tell you that I'll never forget the night we proposed to each other in the sand.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MOTHER & DAUGHTER
We were sitting on the sofa.  I was all cuddled up with my head on his lap.  It was Christmas day and, as he looked down at me, he asked, "Would you like your other Christmas present?"  He had already given me a beautiful ring a few days before, so I told him that he really shouldn't have bought anything else for me.  Then he said, "I didn't."  Having aroused my curiosity, I simply replied with an "Okay."  It was then that he looked at my mother and asked her if she wouldn't mind his asking me to marry him.  Well, she told him she wouldn't mind at all.  At that moment, he looked deep into my eyes and made is request.  Of course, I couldn't turn him down, so I kissed him and happily said, "Yes!"

THATSA NICEA WAY TO ASKA
We both love Italian cuisine.  I took her to one of the finest restaurants on the East Coast which just happens to be right here in Jersey.  So, anyhow, I reserve this quiet little table for two.  Gotta make sure that you get a good waiter, too.  Well, if you can visualize this, we got the candle on the table, live music being played by a trio (keyboard, saxaphone, mandolin) and I queue the waiter to ask after we've eaten if there is anything else we would like.  It was then that I took out the ring and popped the question.  Now for the really cool touch; I requested that the trio stop playing (had to time this to be in between their numbers) while I asked her to marry me.  Well, she accepted and that was their queue to start playing the number I had previously picked out if she happened to say yes.  She sat there in shock and cried the whole time they were playing our song.  We are getting married in two months.  Am I cool or what?

AN UP & DOWN PROPOSAL
Tammy and I both love going to amusement parks.  We ride everything together.  In fact, we are always daring each other to go on the bigger rides.  Roller coasters are definitely our favorites.  Anyhow, I really wanted to propose to her so I bought her one of those temporary rings (you can exchange them toward one she picks out with you later) and got her to agree to go to Six Flags the next weekend.  It was halfway through riding the biggest coaster there that I took the ring out, got her attention, and asked her to marry me.  She screamed out the biggest, "Of course, I will!" I've ever heard and we kissed our way through the entire rest of the ride.  Whew!  Now, that was exhilerating!

The mission of this not-for-profit website is to promote clear insights and toleration regarding the many variations of primary relationships that exist in our world.  We ask for neither acceptance or approval but hope that each visitor who reviews the pages of this site will leave them with a better understanding of the numerous cultural, historical, preferential, religious, sexual, and sociological approaches to coupling that have always existed and will continue to exist as long as there are at least two human beings living on this planet.  If the effort put into creating and maintaining this site results in others coming to the realization that the basic human need to love and be loved takes on many forms which are accepted by those who practice them, whether right or wrong as determined by the personal belief system of others, then it will have served it's purpose well.
