Walking
On Water Together...
-
It was one of those weekends when neither Vincent or Kira
had any idea what the two of them might do together.
Of course, there are always the household chores and a
lawn that needs regular attention. Their habit was to get those things
done early on Saturday mornings so that they could enjoy the rest of the
day together.
This weekend day was no exception in that regard. However,
there was still a question as to what to do with the rest of the day. It
was Kira who first suggested the idea of a picnic. Even though it was a
hot, summer day, they conjectured that somewhere out there was a beautiful
shade tree begging for a few friendly visitors. |

Vincent remembered that Allen Soleman, a fellow-manager
at the office, owned a tract of land that would take less than thirty minutes
away. They had attended a cook-out there the just a few months previously.
It even had a river that ran by it. What could be more ideal for a private
place to enjoy some quiet time together?
|
They located their "Love Bag" on the shelf
in the hallway closet. It was a green knap-sack that he had picked up a
few years before. He found it at a kitchen supply store at the shopping
mall. It had several pockets. Once contained dishes and tableware for two
people, along with a small wooden cutting board and an all-purpose knife. |
The other side contained a larger pocket for whatever food items they wanted
to pack. There was also a tube pocket attached to the side to hold a wine
bottle. It was very compact and easy to carry.
Vincent called Allen to get permission to use his property. |
-
As soon as Kira heard him say, "Thanks, Al. We really
appreciate it," she began taking some items out of the refrigerator to
begin packing their the bag.
He had a fondness for thin sliced beef while she enjoyed
turkey sliced sandwiches. She included some left-over macaroni salad and
filled a plastic container with some chips. They decided to pick
up a chilled bottle of wine somewhere along the way. She carefully
packed two wine glasses in between some cloth napkins.
As she was finishing up, Vincent announced that he had
just replaced the batteries in their portable stereo "boom box" and that
they would have music, too.
It was one of those gorgeous summer days--not too hot
but just right. With the convertable top down, the D'Angelos enjoyed their
drive into the surrounding countryside. It was fun being so alive and especially
being together. As they drove up the long dirt road drive that led to the
clearing by the river on Alan's property, Vincent was the first to notice
the huge oak tree. It shaded a large area between the drive and the river
along the side of the only open area. No spot could be more perfect
for their little picnic.
They picked a spot under the shade tree and spread a blanket
to stretch out on. Kira set the food out while Vincent unscrewed
the cork from the wine bottle. Once ready, they clicked wine glasses.
He smiled and reminded her once again that he loved her.
It was probably the millionth time that he did so, but she never grew tired
of it nor reminding him of the same.
Even though the food and wine was good, their real enjoyment
came from simply being together. This outing was especially nice because
they needed some time to simply to "be" without any outside interruptions.
They chatted about anything that came into their minds including reminiscing
about their first date together.
Once they had finished eating, they packed the various
items back into their bag and layed down next to each other. As chirping
birds flew overhead and a squirrel ran along the branches of a neighboring
tree, Vincent and Kira looked up at the sky and describes the shapes they
saw in the passing clouds to each other.
He had been pointing at a cloud formation that looked
like a rabbit when he heard her giggling. He turned toward her only to
find that she was already up on her feet and standing with her bare feet
in a shallow part of the riverside. In fact, the clearness of the water
revealed that it was shallow all the way across. |

Vincent darted to his feet and, while throwing off his
shoes and socks, asked if he could join her.
"Of course, silly," she replied.
As they both waded out to a rock outcropping, they giggled
together and teased each other with a few splashes of water. It seemed
as if their was a canopy of cool air over the slowly moving water and it
felt even cooler once it was up to their knees. They sat on the rocks and
laughed as they looked down at the bottom halves of their now soaked jeans.
Sometimes doing something harmlessly spontaneous can be a lot of fun.
A good forty-five minutes or so must have passed as they
enjoyed the sensation of being near the middle of the river and continuing
their cloud game together. There was no consideration of the everyday stresses
of work and life. They were completely alone together and enjoying the
beauty of nature around them.
It was romantic.
It really was.
As the sun reached it's highest point in the mid-afternoon
sky, they made their way back through the cool water to the shoreline.
With their pants soaked to the knees, they again found the blanket under
the oak tree. It was Kira who suggested that they hang their jeans out
in the sun to dry.
Vincent inquired, "In the meantime, what shall we do?"
Kira smiled.
It was time for dessert. |
